Abstract :
The title of this paper is intended to capture the two main topics discussed in this exposition with special reference to the Valley of Hinnom in its biblical allusion and as an archeological site. The first presentation is focused on the understanding linked with the place of the Valley of Hinnom especially in the mentions of the place in a number of Biblical occurrences where this valley is being referenced to with allusions to the concept and image of eternal damnation, as a destination for the wicked also known as hell both in the Old and the New Testament and most especially in Jesus’ various usage of the term “Gehenna” in his preaching and ministry. The second part of this exposition is the presentation that explores later archeological discovery from the excavations in the Valley of Hinnom known as the silver scrolls of Ketef Hinnom claimed to be one of the most important Biblical discoveries of antiquity, thus treasures.

The Salamanca Process as an Embodiment of Dominican Charism Today
 DOI :

 Author/s :
Leo-Martin Angelo Ruiz Ocampo

Abstract :
In his letter to the Master of the Dominican Order on the occasion of the 800th Dies Natalis of Saint Dominic, Pope Francis praised the School of Salamanca as being “perhaps the finest expression” of the “unity of truth and charity” that he adverted to as the founding inspiration and formative charism of the Order. This article investigates the experience of the School of Salamanca, how its core dynamic termed as the “Salamanca Process” embodies the charism of the Dominican Order, and the ongoing attempt to recover it as a model for the life and mission of Dominicans today as expressed in official documents of the Order, especially in recent General Chapters.

The Church of Todos los Santos in Kelang (Keelung, Taiwan)

Abstract :
With the discovery of the foundations of the 17th-century Spanish church of Todos los Santos in Heping Island (Keelung, Taiwan) during the excavations from 2011 to 2019, the interest in this church has been ignited. It is not only viewed as a topic for academic discussion but also as a significant cultural heritage site for the city of Keelung. The study of this church, established by Spanish Dominicans coming from the Philippines between 1626 and 1642, has been approached from two angles: one based on historical documents and the other on archaeological data, effectively complementing each other. This paper primarily relies on Spanish and Dutch documentary sources to provide a better understanding of the archaeological findings. Moreover, it offers new perspectives on the archaeological conclusions by highlighting the distinction between two crucial elements: the convent and the church. The paper proposes the possibility that the final church, constructed with stone, may have remained unfinished, which complicates the interpretation of the discovered cemetery in the same site.

Social Responsibility through the Lens of Emmanuel Levinas and the Filipino Value of Sociality

Abstract :
Social responsibility is incumbent upon all human beings because all are called to be ethical toward their neighbors in a disinterested way. What social responsibility demands is radical and is met when we heed the plea of that anonymous other whose face, both high and humble, triggers our guilt for the good life we enjoy and their dire condition. As Levinas insists, the face of the Other summons us to action. Where in our experience as Filipino can we locate such a high ethical standard? Many Filipino scholars claim that sociality is one of the strongest traits of the Filipino people. They are resilient in the face of trials and tribulations because of the person next to them who is willing to lend a helping hand. In the present world order and the current Philippine context, there is a high demand for each person to act more responsibly toward the person next to him. Social responsibility is challenged by the renewed threats of war on a global scale, the resurgence of old injustices like corruption and grave abuse of power, and, likewise by rampant violation of human rights. Therefore, in this article, we ask the primary question: where in our experiences as human beings can we find the notion of social responsibility that recognizes the inviolability of the Other? In answering this, the following tasks are undertaken: first, an exposition of the brief outline of Levinas’ notion of responsibility; second, an unfolding of Filipino sociality through the concepts of kapwa and pagpapakatao; and third, a thematic discussion of the converging and diverging points between Levinas’ notion of social responsibility and Filipino sociality to show that responsibility is a universal value with many faces.

“In this land all is death:” Don Diego Vázquez de Mercado, first secular archbishop of Manila (1608-16) and the Vacant See (1617-20)

Abstract :
This paper deals with the figure of Don Diego Vázquez de Mercado, the first secular archbishop of Manila. While most scholars have analyzed the religious orders’ firm opposition to episcopal visits in their district parishes, I would additionally bring to the fore other aspects of his tenure, such as his relations with the cathedral chapter and his tense relations with the governor of the Philippines, Don Juan de Silva y Enríquez (1609-1616). In dialogue with the historiography of ecclesiastical institutions in the early modern Philippines, this essay analyzes the government of Don Diego Vázquez de Mercado and the cathedral chapter beyond a strictly spiritual motivation, placing these zealous defenders of the principle of the Royal Patronage within a confessional paradigm of ecclesiastical contentiousness.
